Used vs Remanufactured Gym Equipment: What You Actually Get

Remanufactured Cybex Eagle chest press in a clean rebuild bay beside an empty storage unit lane that stands for private as-is sales

Private-party used gym equipment is sold as-is. Remanufactured is stripped, rebuilt to factory spec, tested under load, and backed by 1 year parts and labor. Those are not the same product, even when both get called "used" in search. Below is what you actually get in each lane, with real Build A Gym catalog prices checked October 15, 2026.

Quick map:

  • Used / as-is: Present condition. No rebuild. No warranty. You take the risk.
  • Remanufactured: Full teardown, wear parts replaced, load-tested, 1 year parts and labor.
  • New: Factory new. 1 year parts and labor plus lifetime frame coverage on Build A Gym new equipment.

One more industry quirk: at Build A Gym, the used gym equipment collection is remanufactured inventory (rebuild + warranty), not private-party as-is. True as-is stock is rare. This post teaches the distinction so you can shop any seller with clear eyes.

What is the difference between used and remanufactured gym equipment?

Used means sold in present condition. Remanufactured means the machine went through a rebuild first.

On a private listing you are judging what you can see in a driveway or a storage unit. On a remanufactured unit from Build A Gym, the machine is taken apart, wear parts are replaced as standard, the frame and welds are inspected, electronics are serviced, and the unit is tested under load before it ships. Details live on what remanufactured means.

"Refurbished" is a third word people mix in. Refurbished usually means cleaned and made presentable. Remanufactured means taken apart to the frame, rebuilt, and load-tested. We remanufacture. That is why we use the word.

Used vs remanufactured vs new at a glance

One comparison. Same five questions for each lane.

Risk Buyer owns every surprise after pickup Function tested under load before ship Factory new
Process Whatever you can spot on a walk-around Seven-step rebuild: inspect, disassemble, replace wear parts, frame/weld check, electronics service, reassemble to factory spec, load test Manufacturer build

Delivery You arrange truck, help, and stairs Nationwide freight (lower 48); inside delivery and assembly available; free warehouse pickup in Jarrell, TX Varies by dealer; Build A Gym ships nationwide
Price character Lowest sticker, highest unknown cost Well below new on like-for-like commercial brands; every listing shows the gap Full price; lifetime frame on new from us

What does remanufactured actually include?

Every remanufactured unit runs the same seven steps, whatever the brand or the price:

  1. Full inspection and diagnosis
  2. Complete disassembly
  3. Wear parts replaced as standard (drive belts, V-belts, walking belts, worn cables, bearings, bushings, grips, safety-critical hardware)
  4. Frame and weld inspection
  5. Electronics and console service
  6. Reassembly to factory spec
  7. Tested under load and certified

Cosmetics are honest. Torn or structurally compromised upholstery is replaced. Light scuffs, dings, faded paint, and yellowed plastics may remain. Function is the promise. Looking factory-fresh is not always the outcome, and we would rather say so up front.

Myths that cost people money

  • Myth: "Used" and "remanufactured" mean the same thing. They do not. One is present condition. The other is a rebuild with a warranty. Ask which process the seller actually ran.
  • Myth: Remanufactured always looks brand new. It should perform to spec. Cosmetics can still show honest prior commercial use.
  • Myth: Remanufactured is always the cheaper sticker. On like-for-like commercial brands it usually is. Across different brands and designs, new can win on price (see the chest press example below). Price the exact piece.
  • Myth: A parking-lot walk-around is enough inspection. Cables, belts, bearings, and boards hide failures. A load test finds what a flashlight does not.
  • Myth: As-is is fine if the gym "barely used it." Commercial hours add up fast. Without a rebuild and a warranty, you are betting the next failure lands on someone else's dime. It will not.

Chest press: reman wins big. A Precor S Line selectorized chest press (Remanufactured) is $1,495.00. A new BUILT Strength Fractal Series chest press is $3,295.00. That is $1,800.00 back on one station.

Leg extension: reman still wins, gap depends on brand. A Nautilus Nitro Plus leg extension (Remanufactured) starts at $2,295.00 (variants run $2,295.00 to $2,495.00). A Cybex Eagle leg extension (Remanufactured) is $3,095.00. A new BUILT Fractal Series leg extension is $3,295.00. Fine loading plates? A new BUILT Strength OG Series plate loaded seated leg extension / leg curl starts at $1,395.00 (Ember Fusion; Stealth is $1,645.00) and trains both movements on one frame. Same movement pattern, very different savings.

Functional trainer: reman wins right now. A Cybex FT-360 (Remanufactured) is $2,795.00, which is $1,000.00 under the new BUILT Foundation Series dual adjustable pulley at $3,795.00. A Precor Icarian FTS functional training system (Remanufactured) is $2,495.00, which is $1,300.00 under that same new unit.

Where new wins: a chest press built different. A Cybex Eagle chest press (Remanufactured) is $2,795.00. A new BUILT Strength Chest & Shoulder Multi Press, a selectorized station with flat, incline, and shoulder press positions on one frame, is $2,495.00. New is $300.00 less and adds lifetime frame coverage. Different machines, different feel, so price the exact piece, not the label.

Cardio example: A Precor TRM 835 with P30 console (Remanufactured), Gray Trim, is $2,321.25. On a remanufactured commercial treadmill, the walking belt and drive belt are replaced as standard and the motor, boards, and console are tested under load. Who should buy which lane?

  • Private used / as-is: Only if you can inspect thoroughly, have a service plan, and accept zero warranty. Fine for some free weights. Risky for motors, boards, and cable stacks.
  • Remanufactured: Best default when you want commercial-grade frames at a lower sticker with a real parts-and-labor warranty. Common mix for studios, hotels, apartments, schools, and serious home gyms.
  • New (including BUILT Strength): Best when you want lifetime frame coverage, custom colors, or a footprint/feature set reman inventory does not have right now.

  3. Ask every seller: was this machine disassembled and load-tested, or cleaned and listed?
  4. Confirm warranty start date (ours starts on delivery) and what cosmetics are normal.

Used vs remanufactured FAQ

Is remanufactured gym equipment the same as used?

No. Used or as-is equipment is sold in present condition with no warranty. Remanufactured equipment at Build A Gym is stripped, rebuilt to factory spec, tested under load, and backed by 1 year parts and labor. The store's used collection is remanufactured inventory, not private-party as-is.

What is the difference between refurbished and remanufactured gym equipment?

Refurbished usually means cleaned and made presentable. Remanufactured means taken apart to the frame, with wear parts replaced, then reassembled and tested under load. Build A Gym remanufactures.

What warranty comes with remanufactured gym equipment?

Remanufactured equipment from Build A Gym carries 1 year parts and labor, with coverage starting on the delivery date. New equipment carries 1 year parts and labor plus lifetime frame coverage. Used or as-is carries no warranty.

Will remanufactured gym equipment look brand new?

Not always. Torn or structurally compromised upholstery is replaced. Light scuffs, dings, faded paint, and yellowed plastics may remain. Function is tested under load; cosmetics are honest about prior commercial use.

Is remanufactured gym equipment always cheaper than new?

Usually on like-for-like commercial brands, but not always across every comparison. In the current catalog a remanufactured Precor S Line chest press is $1,495 versus a new BUILT Fractal chest press at $3,295, while a new BUILT Strength Chest & Shoulder Multi Press at $2,495 undercuts a remanufactured Cybex Eagle chest press at $2,795. Price the exact piece.

Can commercial gyms mix new and remanufactured equipment?

Yes. Most commercial floors are a mix of new, BUILT Strength, and remanufactured. Build A Gym offers a free estimate and 3D render, nationwide delivery and install, and commercial financing. Every floor is quoted on its own, and the estimate and 3D render are free.
