A home gym built with commercial-grade equipment costs about $2,378 for a complete barbell setup, about $5,470 for a full garage gym with dumbbells and cardio, and about $15,691 for a commercial-grade setup with cables, a leg machine, and a treadmill. Those are not ranges pulled from thin air. Every number below is a real line item from the Build A Gym catalog, checked on October 1, 2026, before delivery and tax.
Each tier builds on the one before it, so you can start at Tier 1 and grow into Tier 3 without replacing anything you already bought.
- Tier 1, Barbell Essentials: $2,377.56. Rack, adjustable bench, bar, 175 lb of plates.
- Tier 2, Complete Garage Gym: $5,469.86. Adds plates, storage, dumbbells, and a rower.
- Tier 3, Commercial-Grade Home Gym: $15,690.86. Adds a functional trainer, a linear hack squat, and a remanufactured Precor treadmill.
How much does a home gym cost in 2026?
A lot of home gym cost answers give you a range so wide it does not help you plan. The honest answer depends on three things: what you want to train, how much floor you have, and whether you buy new or remanufactured. So instead of a range, here are three complete shopping lists with real prices and links. Use them as a starting point and swap pieces to fit your room.
A few ground rules for the math:
- Prices are the listed catalog prices checked October 1, 2026. Prices and stock change, so check each product page before you order.
- Plates are priced per plate, as listed on the Foundation Series Rubber Weight Plates page.
- Totals are equipment only. Delivery, flooring, and sales tax are covered in the hidden costs section below.
What does a $2,378 home gym include?
Tier 1 is the barbell core: $2,377.56. This is the setup that covers squats, bench press, overhead press, deadlifts, rows, and pull-ups. If you only buy one tier, buy this one.
| Item | Qty | Price | Line total | Why it is here |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BUILT Strength Foundation Series Full Cage Power Rack (New) | 1 | $1,045.00 | $1,045.00 | 52" x 52" footprint, 87" tall, J-cups and spotter bars included |
| BUILT Strength Foundation Series Adjustable Bench 2.0 (New) | 1 | $749.00 | $749.00 | Flat, incline, and upright; 53" x 32" footprint |
| BUILT Strength Foundation Series Olympic Barbell, Standard (New) | 1 | $155.00 | $155.00 | 45 lb bar, rated to 700 lb |
| Foundation Series Rubber Plates: 45 lb | 2 | $109.00 each | $218.00 | the plates you load most |
| Foundation Series Rubber Plates: 25 lb | 2 | $59.00 each | $118.00 | |
| Foundation Series Rubber Plates: 10 lb | 2 | $29.00 each | $58.00 | |
| Foundation Series Rubber Plates: 5 lb | 2 | $14.00 each | $28.00 | |
| Foundation Series Rubber Plates: 2.5 lb | 2 | $3.28 each | $6.56 | small jumps for steady progress; 175 lb of plates total |
| This tier adds | $2,377.56 | |||
Why these picks: the Full Cage Power Rack is the lowest-priced full cage we list right now, it has a 1,000+ lb rating, and it ships with J-cups and spotter bars so you can train heavy alone. The Adjustable Bench 2.0 handles flat, incline, and upright work, so you never need a second bench. The Standard bar is rated to 700 lb, which is plenty for most lifters starting out.
Floor space: plan for the 52" x 52" rack footprint plus room to load plates and walk the bar out. Our home gym power rack guide covers clearance and ceiling height in detail, and you can compare every option in power racks.
What does a $5,470 garage gym add?
Tier 2 adds $3,092.30, for a running total of $5,469.86. This is where a rack in the garage becomes a gym you would actually pick over a membership: dumbbells for accessory work, storage so the floor stays clear, and a conditioning option.
| Item | Qty | Price | Line total | Why it is here |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Two more 45 lb Foundation Series Rubber Plates | 2 | $109.00 each | $218.00 | brings plates to 265 lb |
| BUILT Strength Foundation Series Olympic Weight Plate Tree (New) | 1 | $573.18 | $573.18 | 8 horns, 34" x 27" |
| BUILT Strength Foundation Series Dumbbells, 5 to 50 lb set (New) | 1 | $899.00 | $899.00 | 10 pairs |
| Foundation Series 10-Pair 2-Tier Dumbbell Rack V1 (New) | 1 | $703.12 | $703.12 | matched to the 5 to 50 lb set |
| BUILT Strength Air Rower (New) | 1 | $699.00 | $699.00 | 58 lb, 91" x 24" |
| This tier adds | $3,092.30 | |||
| Running total | $5,469.86 | |||
The dumbbell set and rack are matched on the Foundation Series Dumbbells page, so the 10-pair rack holds the 5 to 50 lb set exactly. The Air Rower is 58 lb and moves easily, which matters in a shared garage. Browse more options in dumbbells and weight plates.
What does a $15,691 commercial-grade home gym add?
Tier 3 adds $10,221.00, for a running total of $15,690.86. This tier is for people who want the machines they would find at a good commercial gym: cables for every angle, a dedicated leg machine, and a treadmill built for commercial use.
| Item | Qty | Price | Line total | Why it is here |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BUILT Strength Foundation Series Dual Adjustable Pulley Functional Trainer (New) | 1 | $3,795.00 | $3,795.00 | 176 lb stack per side, 62" x 47" |
| BUILT Strength 'OG' Series Linear Hack Squat (New), Ember Fusion | 1 | $3,495.00 | $3,495.00 | plate-loaded, 100" x 67" |
| Two more 45 lb plates | 2 | $109.00 each | $218.00 | for the hack squat |
| Two more 25 lb plates | 2 | $59.00 each | $118.00 | brings plates to 405 lb |
| Precor TRM 833 Treadmill w/ P30 Console (Remanufactured) | 1 | $2,595.00 | $2,595.00 | 0.5 to 16 mph, 0 to 15% incline, 88" x 35" |
| This tier adds | $10,221.00 | |||
| Running total | $15,690.86 | |||
The OG Series Linear Hack Squat loads the same plates as your barbell, which is why this tier only adds 140 lb of plates instead of a whole new set. The Precor TRM 833 is remanufactured, which leads to the next question.

Where does remanufactured actually save money?
Remanufactured is not automatically cheaper. It depends on the exact piece. Three real examples from the current catalog:
- Olympic flat bench: remanufactured wins. The Cybex Olympic Flat Bench (Remanufactured) is $571.12. The BUILT Strength Foundation Series Olympic Flat Bench (New) is $899.00. That is $327.88 saved.
- Power cage: new wins on price. The new BUILT Full Cage is $1,045.00. The Hoist Fitness Power Cage (Remanufactured) is $1,495.00, or $450.00 more. What the extra buys: a 434 lb commercial frame, 940 lb of built-in plate storage, and a pull-up station with climbing holds.
- Treadmills: remanufactured is the lane. At the time of writing, every treadmill in our catalog is remanufactured, with in-stock commercial units starting at $2,595.00 for the Precor TRM 833. Browse remanufactured cardio.
Rule of thumb: price the exact piece, not the label. Warranty is the other half of the comparison. New equipment from Build A Gym carries 1-year parts and labor plus lifetime frame coverage. Remanufactured carries 1-year parts and labor with function guaranteed. Used or as-is carries no warranty. Details are on our product guarantees page, and we explain the rebuild process in what remanufactured means.
What hidden costs should you budget for?
The equipment total is not the final number. Plan for these before you check out:
- Getting it home. You have three options. Warehouse pickup in Jarrell, Texas is free, by appointment on weekdays, and you need a trailer or pickup truck. Driveway delivery ships anywhere in the lower 48 and the driver lowers the pallet to your curb or driveway; the price shows at checkout, and a $75 palletizing fee applies to freight packages. Inside Delivery and Assembly brings it into a first-floor room, builds it, tests it, and hauls the packaging away for one rate shown at checkout.
- Assembly. Driveway delivery does not include placement or assembly. If you are not handy or do not have help, price Inside Delivery and Assembly before you decide.
- Flooring. None of the tiers include flooring. We left it out rather than guess a number, because it depends entirely on your square footage. Measure the footprints listed in each table first.
- Sales tax. Not included in any total above.
- Paying over time. Shop Pay Installments is available at checkout for orders up to $30,000, with terms set by Shopify's financing partner and approval not guaranteed. HSA and FSA cards are also a payment option at checkout for eligible items.
- Warranty registration. Coverage starts on delivery, and you need to register within 30 days to keep it. An extra year of mechanical and electrical coverage is available as Care+ if you add it before your order ships.

Is a home gym cheaper than a gym membership?
It depends on what you pay now, so here is the math instead of a made-up membership price. Take your tier total and divide by the number of sessions you expect to train.
At 3 sessions a week for 3 years (468 sessions), before delivery and tax:
- Tier 1: $2,377.56 works out to about $5.08 per session.
- Tier 2: $5,469.86 works out to about $11.69 per session.
- Tier 3: $15,690.86 works out to about $33.53 per session.
Two people training at home cuts each of those in half. To find your payback point, divide your tier total by what you pay each month for gym access now. The result is the number of months until the home gym has paid for itself.
How can you lower the total without buying junk?
- Start at Tier 1 and add. Nothing in Tier 1 gets replaced in Tier 2 or 3, so buying in stages costs you nothing extra.
- Pick it up yourself. If you are within driving distance of Jarrell, Texas and have a trailer or truck, warehouse pickup is free.
- Know you are going to Tier 3? The BUILT Strength Zaia All In One Gym System at $4,295.00 combines a power rack, a Smith machine, and dual adjustable pulleys in one frame. Buying it instead of the Full Cage ($1,045.00) plus the functional trainer ($3,795.00) saves $545.00 and one footprint. The cable ratio is different (2:1 on the Zaia, 4:1 on the functional trainer), so check the specs against how you train.
- Buy the bar you need. The Standard Olympic barbell ($155.00) is rated to 700 lb. The Pro ($289.00) is spring steel rated to 1,500 lb. Upgrade when your lifts call for it.
- Compare condition piece by piece. As the bench and rack examples show, the cheaper option flips depending on the item.
Which home gym budget is right for you?
- Choose Tier 1 if you mostly train with a barbell, have a one-car garage bay or spare room, and want the most results per dollar.
- Choose Tier 2 if you want a gym you could fully replace a membership with, including accessory work and conditioning.
- Choose Tier 3 if you want commercial machines at home, share the gym with a partner or family, or want a commercial treadmill at home.
