How Does Gym Equipment Financing Work? Home vs Commercial, Explained

Gym equipment financing lets you spread the cost of a home gym or a full commercial floor over monthly payments instead of paying it all up front. At Build A Gym there are two main tracks: Shop Pay Installments right at checkout for orders up to $30,000 (best terms at $25,000 or less), and a business application for commercial orders that can reach $500,000 through our lending partners. Build A Gym is not the lender, so your rate, term, and approval come from the provider. Financing covers the order total, including delivery and assembly you add at checkout.

How does gym equipment financing work at checkout?

For a home gym, or a smaller add-on order for a facility, the fastest route is Shop Pay Installments. There is no separate application form and nothing to send us. It runs inside the normal checkout:

  1. Add your equipment, plus any delivery or Inside Delivery & Assembly option, to the cart.
  2. At checkout, choose Shop Pay, then Pay in installments.
  3. Enter your information to see the plans you qualify for. Payment amounts and any interest are shown before you confirm.
  4. Place the order. The first payment is collected at checkout.

Shop Pay Installments is offered through Shopify's financing partner. Eligibility, terms, and whether interest applies are set by that partner, and approval is not guaranteed. The ceiling is $30,000, and the provider's strongest terms sit at or below $25,000. Full details are on our home gym financing page.

Gym equipment financing paths by order size: Shop Pay Installments up to $30K, business financing from $10K, Priority Capital build-outs up to $500K, plus HSA or FSA as a payment method

How is commercial gym equipment financing different?

Commercial gym equipment financing is a business obligation, not a consumer checkout plan. It fits gym startups, studios, apartment and HOA fitness centers, schools, and anyone outfitting a facility. The usual flow looks like this:

  • Start with a quote. Our commercial team builds the equipment list (and the floor layout, if you want it) first. An application moves faster with a real quote attached.
  • One application, many lenders. Business orders of $10,000 and up can apply through our commercial gym financing page. For large build-outs, Priority Capital offers application-only financing up to $500,000 with no business financials required at that level.
  • Soft pull first. Priority Capital's credit team starts with a soft pull and shops the file across 40+ lending partners. Approval decisions typically come back in 24 hours or less, and funding typically lands in about 48 hours.
  • Funds go to us, then we schedule. Once you sign final documents, funds are wired to Build A Gym and we schedule production, freight, and installation.

Startups qualify too. Priority Capital considers credit profiles from roughly 500 FICO and up, and works with new and established businesses. There is no age limit on the equipment, so used and remanufactured strength machines finance the same way new ones do.

What do you need to apply for business financing?

  • Legal business name, EIN, and time in operation
  • An equipment quote from our commercial team
  • An owner or officer authorized to sign
  • Business financials only if the request goes above the $500,000 application-only limit

The lender sets the final requirements. That list is what is typically requested.

What does financing a gym actually cost per month?

The rate and the term length move your payment more than anything else. Here is the plain loan math on a $50,000 commercial floor at the indicative rate ranges Priority Capital publishes (Tier A from 5.5%, Tier B 7.5% to 8.5%, Tier C and startups from 9.5%). These are illustrations, not offers or quotes.

Rate (APR) 36 months: payment 36 months: total interest 60 months: payment 60 months: total interest
5.5% about $1,510/mo about $4,350 about $955/mo about $7,300
7.5% about $1,555/mo about $5,990 about $1,002/mo about $10,110
9.5% about $1,602/mo about $7,660 about $1,050/mo about $13,010

Two takeaways. A longer term cuts the monthly payment by roughly a third but can nearly double the interest you pay. And at every rate, the biggest lever is the price of the equipment itself. Swapping a few new machines for remanufactured commercial units lowers the amount financed before any rate is applied. Figures assume a standard fixed-rate installment loan with no fees; your actual terms come from the lender.

Should you lease or finance gym equipment?

People search "fitness equipment leasing" and "gym equipment financing" as if they are the same thing. They are not always the same structure:

  • Equipment loan or installment financing: you own the equipment from day one and pay down a balance. This is how Shop Pay Installments works, and it is the common structure for business equipment financing.
  • Lease: a lender owns the equipment and you pay to use it, sometimes with a buyout at the end. Ask what the buyout is and who owns the machines when the term ends.

Before you sign anything, ask the lender to state in writing whether it is a loan or a lease, the buyout amount if any, and whether freight, flooring, and installation are included in the funded amount. On the tax side, many businesses ask about deducting equipment in the year it is placed in service. That is a question for your accountant, not your equipment dealer.

Can you use an HSA or FSA for gym equipment?

Sometimes, and it is a payment method rather than financing. At Build A Gym, HSA/FSA is an option in the checkout payment list. You answer a few health questions, a licensed provider reviews your answers, and if your order qualifies, a letter of medical necessity arrives by email after you check out. You can also split one order across an HSA or FSA card and a regular card. Not everyone qualifies, and your plan makes the final call on any claim.

Timing matters this time of year. Many FSA plans are use it or lose it at the end of the plan year, so check your plan's deadline before December. See how it works and which items are eligible on our HSA and FSA page. This is general information, not tax advice.

Yes. Remanufactured machines check out the same as new ones with Shop Pay Installments, and commercial financing has no age limit on the equipment.

It is worth applying. Priority Capital works with startups and established businesses, and startup rates typically start around 9.5%. Your actual rate is set by their credit review.

The provider that issued the plan. Use the contact details in your Shop Pay confirmation email, or contact Priority Capital for commercial financing. For questions about the equipment, freight, or your order, email sales@buildagym.com.
