The Precor Discovery Series Smith Machine delivers linear bearing guided bar travel, angled bar path, counterbalanced bar system, multiple lockout points, and heavy-duty Precor Discovery commercial construction — 395 lb machine, weight plates not included, 56"×84" footprint. The Smith machine is the barbell training platform that removes the spotter requirement from heavy compound pressing and squatting — the guided bar path constrains the bar to a fixed vertical (or angled) track, so the user can bail out safely at any point in the lift by rotating the bar onto the nearest safety hook without a second person present. The Precor Discovery Smith Machine uses an angled bar path rather than a strictly vertical one: an angled path tilts the bar trajectory to follow the natural arc of a barbell squat or press more closely than a purely vertical path does, which is the biomechanical criticism of vertical Smith machines — they force the wrist, elbow, and shoulder into a mechanically compromised plane during the bench press, and force the torso into a more upright position during the squat than the lifter's anatomy may naturally favor. An angled path accommodates more of the natural range of motion variation between users.
